The most popular day trips from Kyoto are Osaka, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji. I talk all about them in this article. Instead, I want to highlight some of the hidden gem day trips near Kyoto that are definitely worth a visit without sacrificing too much time on the train.

Kurama

Kurama is the perfect hidden gem day trip from Kyoto. It’s a mountainous area located north of Kyoto, known for its beautiful temples and shrines, hiking trails, and natural hot springs. It’s an easy day trip from Kyoto via train. Popular amongst locals and well-researched travelers you’ll enjoy fresh mountain air and a break from the crowds.

Here are a few highlights I’d recommend viewing:

  • Kurama-dera Temple: A Buddhist temple nestled in the mountains, famous for its connection to the Tengu folklore and its unique blend of Buddhism and Shintoism. Beautiful trees
  • Kifune Shrine: A picturesque Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of water, known for its stone lanterns lining the path to the main hall and its unique “omikuji” (fortune-telling paper) that reveals messages when dipped in water.
  • Mount Kurama Hike: A popular and relatively easy hiking trail leading to both Kurama-dera Temple and Kifune Shrine. It offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Near the top you’ll enjoy a path of raised roots in the forest.
  • Kurama Onsen: Several traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) with hot spring baths, perfect for relaxing after a hike or exploring the area.

Lake Biwa

Lake Biwa is the largest fresh water lake in Japan. I stayed near lake Biwa on my first ever trip to Japan so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Despite how close it is to Kyoto, hardly any tourists visit. I’d highly recommend stopping by to enjoy some relaxing views and bike rides.

Enjoy a SUP rental: Rent a paddle board on the lake or take a ride on the locally famous boat called The Michigan. The name comes from Shiga prefecture’s sister-state relationship with Michigan from the USA, home to many great lakes.

Cycle around the lake: A 140km cycling route circles the lake, offering stunning views and fun stops throughout. You could stop at a hotel along the way to complete the trip in two days. Maybe add a stop at Hikone Castle while you ride.

Uji

Uji is a small city situated between Kyoto and Nara and a tea-lovers paradise. Known from the Tale of Genji and its production of delicious green tea. It’s about 20 minutes from Kyoto by train and is the perfect day trip or rest stop on the way to Nara. The city is small so there’s no need to stay overnight. But it is a great place to visit for some delicious treats and relaxing views.

Other Kyoto Hidden Gem Day Trips: Ine & Amanohashidate

Some people will recommend a visit to Ine – as if it’s very close to Kyoto city center. However, despite being in the same prefecture, it might be too far and inconvenient for a day trip. Amanohashidate is a little over 2 hours away. While Ine is 3 and a half hours away. Instead of a day trip I think it’d be better to do a 2 day 1 night stay at least to truly enjoy the area.
