Kyoto’s central location makes it easy to visit 4 top attractions with relative ease. In this article I recommend for of the most popular day trips from the area. If you’re looking to get off the beaten path, check out my article on 3 hidden gem day trips from Kyoto.

Himeji Castle

Himeji

The farthest of the day trips from Kyoto on this list is Himeji. A little less than 2 hours away by bullet train. I didn’t get a chance to visit Himeji until my fifth visit to Japan. But I absolutely loved it. It was a quick stop from the bullet train on my way to Okayama. I was blown away by the size of the castle and the cherry blossoms blooming on the grounds. I’d definitely recommend it if you are interested in history or architecture. The city itself is relatively small but there are shopping arcades right outside the station with plenty to see and do. You can also explore inside the castle to learn more about its historical significance and structure.

Retro shopping area in Osaka

Osaka

An extremely popular – and albiet obvious suggestion, Osaka is an excellent stop if you’re only hitting one of these major cities. Osaka city is much more expansive than Kyoto but only around 30 minutes away. It has a more bustling and modern atmosphere than its historical counterpart. Known as a foodie paradise – even the pickiest of eaters will find excellent food here. Other highlights include visiting Osaka Castle, checking out the Dontonbori shopping district, and enjoying local foods.

Deer in Nara

Nara

Previously a hidden gem, but now a frequent on lists for day trips from Kyoto amongst influencers. I worry Nara may soon be removed from my recommendations which I say with a heavy heart. However, I also know the local businesses really benefit from the tourism. So for now I’ll continue recommending it. But do keep in mind it has become massively overcrowded. For your reference, I first visited in 2019, then again in 2023 and 2024. Each year got progressively more crowded. Personally, I like to stay in Nara when I visit – this helps take some of the pressure off Kyoto tourism and I enjoy the laid back atmosphere Nara has to offer once the day-trippers leave. Only 45 minutes away from Kyoto it’s less than my first job’s commute.

Some of the highlights of Nara include visiting the temples, feeding the deer, and hiking up Mt. Wakakusa.

NOTE: Please be mindful of trash disposal in Nara. I have found that the grounds of the park and bathrooms have become dirtier each year. It’s important as tourists to respect the places we visit, especially one so grounded in nature. So please do your part and throw your trash away at home to keep the deer safe. I doubt someone reading this post is the type to litter in the first place though.

Skyline view of Kobe, Japan

Kobe

An honorable mention I have an entire article about. Learn more about the best things to see and do in the city. Including the best zoo to visit in Japan.
