Enjoy the Views & Make Wishes for Love from Venus Bridge

The Venus Bridge is a unique landmark offering stunning panoramic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. Unlike traditional straight bridges, the Venus Bridge boasts a distinctive spiral design, resembling a seashell or a snail’s shell. Located atop Mount Suwa, the bridge offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Kobe. You can see the bustling cityscape, the expansive harbor, and even the distant islands of Awaji and Ikuchi.

The view is particularly mesmerizing at night, when the city lights twinkle like a million stars. Situated on the Venus Terrace near the bridge, there is a key lock monument which allows couples to attach “love locks” with messages expressing their affection. The belief is that couples who lock their love here will have their wishes granted. The Venus Bridge is completely free to visit and is accessible by several methods. The easiest option is taking the Suwayama Ropeway, which directly takes you to the observation deck near the bridge. Alternatively, you can hike up the mountain trails, I did this and really enjoyed the walk.

NOTE: If you are very scared of heights you’ll want to skip this. The bridge is steadily ramps upwards above the roadway below and overlooks the city.

Meet the Animals at Kobe Animal Kingdom

Kobe Animal Kingdom is a unique animal and flower park. The grounds are primarily located in and around a greenhouse and feature a wide variety of plants and animals. It was created by Japanese botanist and collector Kamo Mototeru in 2006. The zoo includes multiple open exhibits, meaning there is no glass between you and the animals. For example, you can walk directly underneath red pandas on their branches, smell the scent of popcorn emitting from the binturong, and possibly have a monkey fly over your head. Oh, and you’ll even get the opportunity to pet and feed capybara!! (petting is free, feeding was about 200 yen, $2). I wrote an entire article about this amazing place, here.

Go for a Hike and Marvel at Nunobiki Waterfall

Cloaked in myth and cascading beauty, Nunobiki Falls holds a revered place among Japan’s waterfalls. Celebrated as one of the “three greatest divine waterfalls,” it has inspired countless poems and stories throughout history.

Nunobiki falls is comprised of four waterfalls: Ontaki, Mentaki, Meotodaki, and Tsuzumigataki. Among them, Ontaki’s 43-meter (140-foot) flow stands out, its waters harmoniously merging with Meotodaki (meaning “husband and wife falls”) in a captivating display of unity.

The very name “Nunobiki” (“draped cloth”) paints a picture of the falls’ beauty. Imagine a cascade of pristine white water, flowing like sheer white fabric over the rugged rocks.

Due to its compact size (only a couple blocks) you can enjoy a quick pit stop before the rest of your travel.
