At this point I’m sure you’ve already heard of Belgian chocolate, waffles, and fries. But I’m here to confirm these are absolutely not over-hyped. If you ever find yourself in Belgium absolutely give these sweet treats a try!

Belgian Chocolate

Belgium is renowned for its chocolate, and for good reason. Belgian chocolate absolutely lives up to the hype. In the states the only “Belgian” chocolate I had before was from Godiva – but upon arrival we tried out different local chocolatiers throughout Brussels and Bruges. Enjoy an abundance of exquisite pralines, truffles, and bars. Grab some for souvenirs, if you can resist them. To this day – nearly 10 years later – it is still the smoothest and more delicious chocolate I have ever had. Get your chocolate fix from Elisabeth or Dumon.

Waffles

Belgian waffles are a special treat. Different from American style waffles and even American style Belgian waffles. They are small (about half the size) and more rectangular without a perfect edge. They keep an authentic look and offer a bit of crunch before meeting the soft center. Belgian waffles are thick, fluffy, and often studded with pearl sugar. Filled or topped with a variety of flavors, such as chocolate or nutella. The classic, made with sugar cubes, is my ultimate favorite. Each bite is a sweet and slightly savory delight. If you hate soggy waffles then you will love Belgian waffles since they tend to maintain their crunch. Grab one near the Brussels Town Hall at Obe Waffle Shop.

Frites (Fries)

They’re not French – they’re Belgian. Belgium is famous for its frites (fries) and takes them very seriously. Thick-cut and double-fried to perfection. Enjoy with the popular mayo dipping sauce, classic American-style with ketchup, or or andalouse sauce. Grab some from Joe La Frite in Brussels.
